Livelihood Support
Programme
Most
of the population in the
earthquake
affected area
is dependent on agriculture. Those who do not have land work as
porters or labourers. Other popular trades
include
carpentry, blacksmith,
cobbler,
barber,
etc. All these families are generally poor depending on daily wages
and do not have enough backup to support the families for long.
Economic
rehabilitation appeared to be the
most urgent requirement
after the shelter
for
these people
.
Initially
the
Government provided the affected people with ration but livelihood
support
not
considered.
Through the
'Rebuilding Trust' programme livelihood support has been provide to
302 vulnerable families in 7 villages in Uri sub-division.
Different trades identified through participatory need
analysis
include cow and sheep rearing, poultry, tailoring centre, computer
centre, catering units, welding machine, carpentry kit and shops
etc.
Prior to
livelihood support an effort was made to organise the community into Self Help Groups. People were introduced to the concept
of self help and the group dynamics. Capacity building was done
through regular meetings. Bank accounts have been
opened for many SHGs.
For
livestock support
linkages have been made
with the J&K Departments of Sheep and Animal Husbandry, Baramulla
for post distribution care of the animals. These Departments have
also assured to help in marketing of the produce. The animals have
also been insured for one year.
