The workshop  “Education for Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions” was held from 18-20 January 2005 at Ahmedabad, India in conjunction with the International Conference on Education for a Sustainable Future (ESF)  organized by Centre for Environment Education (CEE)  in collaboration with the Ministries of Environment and Forests, and of Human Resource Development, Government of India, and UNESCO. 

The workshop attracted participation from around the world including UK, China, Romania, Nepal, Central Tibetan Administration, Government in Exile, all the Indian Himalayan states and other Indian states down from south. Major  issues discussed during the workshop include: 

  •  Trans-boundary cooperation for conservation in mountains
  •   Carrying capacity & sustainable livelihoods
  •   Resource degradation and sustainable resource utilization in the mountain region
  •  Capacity building of various stakeholders
  •   Strengthening networks & partnerships

The workshop was opened with a keynote address on "Mountain ecosystems: a global resource" by PS Ramakrishnan, Professor Emeritus, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. Workshop participationproceedings  and papers are available for further details.
