Thrust Areas

The primary objective of CEE Himalaya is to facilitate the efforts towards improving the quality of environment in the Himalayan region and the quality of life of the people living there. Himalaya Initiative therefore intends to focus upon the following as elementary tools to meet the goal.

Awareness and education: Create and increase awareness and understanding of environmental issues in all sections of society with a view to motivate people to inculcate environment friendly attitudes. Give environmental orientation to education and develop locale specific education and communication material.

Capacity building: Create expertise in the field of environmental education and build capacity of various stakeholders in achieving sustainable mountain development, create a cadre of people who can work for the cause of the environment.

Sustainable tourism: Promote environmentally responsible tourism and do advocacy for a community controlled and equitable tourism. Creating awareness on reducing and managing solid waste problem associated with tourism.

Disaster preparedness and rehabilitation: Since the entire Himalayan belt falls in earthquake prone zone, earthquake is a frequent natural disaster claiming precious life and property both. An awareness and preparedness is of great significance in the region.

Information servicing and networking: Preparing and maintaining necessary base line data, documenting traditional knowledge and experiences related to integrated mountain development and disseminate it through networking.
